The Institute for Marine Biology (IfMB) was founded in 1988 as a private research and teaching institution by Dr. Claus Valentin, marine biologist, long-time employee of the Zoological Institute at Kiel University, author, research diver, and VDTL diving instructor. Now, after many years, Claus is retiring. I, in particular, must thank Claus for the excellent and long-standing collaboration. We certainly hope that Claus will continue to support us with his advice and assistance for many years to come. Enjoy your new boat! :)
A new era begins.
Dr. Jenny Tuček
Since 2016, it has been headed by Jenny Tuček, Ph.D. Jenny Tuček first visited Giglio in 2005 and became acquainted with the institute as an intern. After receiving her diploma from the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, she temporarily took over the management of the field station in 2009. In the following years, she studied marine biology at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The focus of her diploma and doctoral theses was on the population biology of sea turtles. In 2013, Jenny Tuček returned to the IfMB and received her second university degree in 2015. Through her many years of work at the IfMB, Jenny Tuček has also proven herself at the dive center and is known to many of our guests for her sunny disposition. The CDC and the IfMB will therefore continue to work closely together to introduce interested recreational divers to the fascinating underwater world of the Mediterranean.
Diving and marine biology
The CDC offers recreational divers the opportunity to explore the Mediterranean habitat in greater detail. In cooperation with the Institute for Marine Biology (IfMB), we organize lectures and courses that vividly characterize the marine habitats of drop-offs, sandy bottoms, and seagrass meadows. During our events, participants can observe living organisms from these habitats up close using binoculars. Recognizing organisms while diving, as well as gaining new knowledge about the habitat, provides a completely new perspective on the fascinating underwater world. There is still much to discover – even for experienced divers...

We have three classrooms available. Everyone has their own binoculars! Here's information about marine biology courses for recreational divers.
Our employees are happy to assist and always contribute their own experience from their studies.
Practical learning through simple experimental setups.
Each participant will have their own workstation (including binoculars).
Binoculars allow you to observe even the smallest organisms in detail.
During dives, you will collect material for the course with our biologists.
